While my fellow SharePoint MVP John White has written a good article on new-old, one-way, user profile import from Active Directory to SharePoint<\/a>, it is well worthy to note that the old, FIM based, read&write user profile import is still there.<\/p>\n

While there is not many users out there that need two-way communication between AD and SharePoint, there are still some of them. This post is for them. People who do not need two way stuff, are probably better served with the profile import described in John\u2019s post. <\/p>\n

So, let\u2019s see how to do the old, FIM based, two way profile sync with 2013 (not much has changed since 2010, you\u2019ll notice). <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In Central Administration, open Service management (\u201cManage Services on server\u201d)<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Check if \u201cUser Profile Synchronization Service\u201d is running (yes, the one which we know and love). If it isn\u2019t, please start it.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And chose the credentials the service should run under<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Go back to Central administration, chose \u201cManage Service Applications\u201d, and Open the \u201cUser Profile Service Application\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Click on \u201cConfigure Synchronization Connection\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Add a new connection, if there isn\u2019t one<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Fill in the settings for your connection\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026 an click on \u201cPopulate\u201d button. Chose \u201cUsers\u201d checkbox\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And then click \u201cOK\u201d. Go back to User Profile Service Application\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026and click on \u201cConfigure Synchronization Timer Job\u201d. Set your sync intervals there\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026 and back to the User Profile Service Application to do the initial sync\u2026 (click \u201cStart Profile Synchronization\u201d)<\/p>\n

As this is the first time we are doing the sync, chose \u201cFull sync\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

You will notice that the \u201cProfile Synchronization Status\u201d has changed from \u201cIdle\u201d to \u201cSynchronizing\u201d. <\/p>\n

Click on the \u201cSynchronizing\u201d link to get the sync status\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Once the sync is finished, the status changes back to \u201cIdle\u201d, and you have the sync results in the Profiles section.<\/p>\n

Go back to User Profile Service Application and click on \u201cManage User Profiles\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

After doing some querying, you see your imported users there\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026with their properties.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n
